In today's fast-paced world, promoting the well-being and mental health of young children is of utmost importance. Recognizing this need, nurseries are increasingly integrating mindfulness practices into their early years curriculum, aligning with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. In this blog post, we will explore the significant trend of incorporating mindfulness and well-being in nurseries, examining its benefits and how it complements the EYFS curriculum. Why is mindfulness important to incorporate:

  • Nurturing Social-Emotional Development

  • Building Concentration and Focus

  • Developing Mind-Body Connection

  • Fostering Resilience and Coping Strategies

  • Supporting Positive Relationships

Mindfulness practices can be adapted and tailored to suit the age and developmental stage of children. Here are a few examples of mindfulness practices that Peekaboo incorporates:

Mindful Breathing

We teach children to focus on their breath as a way to calm their minds and bodies. Encouraging them to take slow, deep breaths.

Mindful Eating

We encourage children to pay attention to their senses while eating. Asking them to observe the colors, textures, and smells of their food.

Mindful Movement

We incorporate simple yoga or stretching exercises into the daily routine. Teaching children basic poses, such as the tree pose or cat-cow stretch, and encouraging them to focus on their body movements and sensations.

Mindful Listening

During group activities or circle time, we engage children in mindful listening exercises. We play calming music or nature sounds and ask children to close their eyes and listen attentively, identifying and sharing the sounds they hear.

Mindful Art

We provide materials for creative expression, such as coloring or drawing, and encourage children to focus on the process rather than the outcome. Encouraging them to pay attention to the colors, shapes, and strokes they make.

Mindful Storytelling

We choose books for our daily storytime with themes of mindfulness, empathy, or emotional well-being, and engage children in discussions about the characters' feelings and experiences. Storytelling is a tool to explore emotions and promote empathy.

The inclusion of mindfulness and well-being practices in nurseries is a transformative trend that has gained significant recognition in early childhood education, it empowers young children to thrive in all aspects of their lives. As we continue to embrace mindfulness in Peekaboo, we are paving the way for a generation that possesses the tools to navigate challenges, cultivate inner peace, and lead fulfilling lives.
