Smooth Start: Helping Your Child Adjust to (a New) Daycare

Parenthood brings an abundance of joy, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the common hurdles many parents encounter is managing their child's separation anxiety, especially when it's time to transition to daycare. At Peekaboo, we understand the importance of a smooth transition for both the child and the parents. Here are some tips and insights to help navigate through this phase with ease.

Separation anxiety is a natural part of a child's development, often emerging around 8-14 months and peaking around 18 months to 2 years old. It's a reflection of a strong bond between the child and their primary caregiver. The fear of separation can trigger distress and unease in children when they're apart from their loved ones. How Peekaboo approaches the transition:

  • Gradual Introduction: At Peekaboo, we believe in a gentle transition approach. On the first day, we encourage children to join for a short period from 10.00 to 12.00. During the initial 45 minutes, parents can participate in snack time and circle activities, allowing the child to acclimate while feeling the comfort of their presence.

  • Incremental Separation: The second day marks a step towards independence. Parents can leave after 15 minutes, gradually extending the duration as the child becomes more familiar and comfortable with the environment and caregivers.

  • Open Communication: Our team at Peekaboo values communication. We share pictures, keep parents informed about their child's day, activities, and milestones achieved, via our App. This transparent approach helps build trust and reassurance for both the child and the family.

  • Comfort Objects: Encouraging children to bring a familiar object from home, like a favorite toy or blanket, can provide a sense of security during the transition period.

  • Establishing Routine: Consistency is key. Our daycare follows a structured schedule that includes playtime, learning activities, meals, and rest. Establishing a routine helps children feel secure and know what to expect each day.

While we have a suggested transition plan in place, we understand that every child is unique. Our caregivers are sensitive to each child's individual needs and temperament. We adapt our approach based on the child's comfort level, ensuring a personalized experience that fosters a sense of security and trust.

Here are some tips specifically tailored for parents to aid in managing separation anxiety during the daycare transition:

Set a Positive Tone

Children often mirror their parents' emotions. Approach drop-offs with a positive attitude, assuring your child that daycare is a fun and safe place to be.

Establish a Routine

Be Honest and Reassuring

Avoid Lingering

Communicate with Caregivers

Self-Care for Parents

Trust the Process

Remember, every child is different, and it's okay for the transition to take time. Stay patient and supportive throughout this adjustment period. Your trust in the daycare staff and the positive tone you set during drop-offs will greatly assist your child in managing separation anxiety.

At Peekaboo, we strive to create a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and supported. Our goal is not just to ease separation anxiety but to foster a love for learning and exploration in every child.

If you're considering enrolling your child at Peekaboo, rest assured that our dedicated team is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for your little one. Together, we can navigate through this phase and witness your child thrive in our caring and stimulating environment.
