The Power of Emotional Education in Nurseries

In today's rapidly changing world, the importance of emotional education in early child care and development cannot be overstated. Emotional education, also known as social-emotional learning, goes beyond traditional academic subjects and focuses on teaching children how to identify, understand, and manage their emotions. At Peekaboo, we recognize the significance of nurturing hearts and minds, and that's why we have embraced emotional education as a global education trend.

At its core, emotional education is about providing children with the tools and skills to navigate the complex landscape of emotions. It involves helping them identify different emotions, understand their triggers, and develop strategies to manage their feelings in a healthy and constructive way. For us at Peekaboo, it’s crucial to foster emotional intelligence, so that our children learn to regulate their emotions, build resilience, and develop empathy towards others. Emotional education has become a global education trend in early child care for several reasons. Firstly, research consistently shows that emotional intelligence is closely linked to children's overall well-being and success in life. Through emotional education, children cultivate self-awareness, self-esteem, and positive social interactions, preparing them for a healthy and fulfilling future.

Secondly, the world we live in today is more interconnected and diverse than ever before. Emotional education equips children with the skills needed to navigate this diverse and complex world. It promotes cultural sensitivity, empathy, and understanding, fostering inclusivity and acceptance from an early age.

Furthermore, emotional education also plays a crucial role in preventing and addressing mental health issues among children. By providing a safe and supportive environment that encourages open expression of emotions, early childcare centres like Peekaboo can empower children to identify and seek help when they need it. This proactive approach sets a foundation for lifelong mental well-being.

At Peekaboo, following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, one of the key areas we focus on is Personal, Social, and Emotional Development. Some specific examples of how Peekaboo incorporates Social Emotional Learning (PSED) into our daily routines:

  • Emotion Recognition Activities like using emotion flashcard and songs.

  • Engaging the children in role-playing scenarios where they practice resolving conflicts through communication and understanding each other’s perspectives.

  • Reading books that highlight characters experiencing various emotions and challenges, discussing their feelings and perspectives encouraging children to empathize.

  • Organize activities where children can express kindness, such as sharing toys or complimenting each other.

  • Introduce age-appropriate mindfulness exercises like guided meditation or mindful coloring to promote self-awareness and emotional regulation, read more about our approach to Mindfulness here.

  • Offer specific praise for positive behaviors, such as sharing or helping a friend.

  • As teachers we model positive social interactions and emotional regulation, serving as examples for the children.

  • Ensure the Peekaboo environment feels safe and nurturing, where children feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking help when needed.

By incorporating these strategies into daily routines, Peekaboo creates a supportive environment that enhances children's social-emotional skills, setting a strong foundation for their future emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships.
